Making decisions easier in business + what to expect from me

Published over 1 year ago • 1 min read

Hey Reader,

When I started freelancing in 2017, I worked with a graphic designer to create a logo. She sent 11 concepts, and there were two that I really loved.

She recommended one of the others, saying it would translate better to print and seemed to represent me better overall. A few close friends weighed in, and they agreed — this logo was the one to choose.

So I did.

And I’ve regretted it ever since.

Don’t get me wrong — it’s a fine logo and it has served me well. But I’ve never been able to stop thinking about the other two.

Fast forward to this week. I’m working with a new designer on a whole branding package for Scenic Route Digital and Your First Digital Product.

On the second round of concepts, she shared three. She thought the second was the best. My son and partner liked the first. But when I saw the third, I said (out loud) — ooh!

I wrestled with it for a day but then thought — if I pick one of these other ones, all I’ll ever think about is that someone else wanted me to do it. Someone else thought I should.

We're moving forward with the third.

There are a lot of opinions out there. And even more “shoulds.”

It’s great to ask for and weigh feedback. But at the end of the day, it’s all you. It’s the wonderful thing about being in business — you get to make the decisions. Those decisions are markedly easier when you trust yourself.

This is my first real email to this (very small) list and I want to share what to expect. I’ll be sending one or two monthly emails.

  • The first will be earlier in the month. It will be more personal — a story or something on my mind and close to my heart.
  • The second will be later in the month. It will be about the podcast/YouTube show — a quick summary of the episodes that month and the top takeaways from each.

Thank you for being here, and I hope you stick around as I grow!

Rene

P.S. I'm looking for guests! If you know of anyone who might be a good guest on the show, please fill out this quick form and I'll reach out to them.

Hey Reader, A few months ago I went to the store to buy some new mascara. I've been wearing the same kind for years, but don't need to buy it very often because it lasts me a long time. The salesperson took me over to the section and said, you don't want waterproof mascara (which is what I usually get). You want the regular mascara. So I picked up the regular mascara, checked out and went about life. In the subsequent weeks, I realized why I don't buy regular mascara. I'm a business owner, in...

Hey Reader, Every year my son's high school marching band takes a trip and marches in a parade out of town. The band keeps the kids super busy for the duration of the 5-day trip. The kids went to Disney (Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom) plus Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach at the beginning of March. It's an exhausting (but fun) trip. When he got home, he opened his computer, saw how much work he had to do, immediately got overwhelmed, closed the computer and went to sleep. 😑...
